CHRISTMAS AT CANTERBURY
New holiday event at Canterbury Shaker Village

Canterbury, NH--New this year, Canterbury Shaker Village presents Christmas at Canterbury, Saturday and Sunday, December 6th and 7th, 2008, from 3 pm to 8 pm.

Christmas at Canterbury celebrates the Christmas of a simpler era with a candlelight stroll through the decorated historic Shaker Village. Along the way, visitors can enjoy the gingerbread house showcase and contest, musical entertainment, traditional arts demonstrations, candy making, and activities for the whole family. At the Artisan Marketplace, visitors can shop for unique, handcrafted items. Horse drawn sleigh or wagon rides will be available on Saturday, the 6th.

The event will be magical, literally. Magician Robert Olson will conjure real 19th Century magician Richard Potter and his magic show both days at 5 pm, 6 pm and 7 pm. Olson has performed at museums and historical societies across the United States, Canada and England. The magic is done with recreated and original props, 19th century costume, and the early language that appeared in the magic books of Potter's time.

Two entertainment venues offer a variety of music and theater. Accordionist Gary Sredzienksi performs Saturday, the 6th at 6 pm, in the North Shop Barn, where visitors may enjoy complementary hot cider while listening to music. Other performers include Dudley Laufman and Two Fiddles, the Sugar River String Band, The Shaker Singers and duo Wendy Barrett and Rick Lindberg. A children’s theatrical presentation adapted from an original Shaker performance piece rounds out the event.

The event was conceived by Canterbury Shaker Village Executive Director Funi Burdick. “‘Christmas at Canterbury’ showcases 200 years of Shaker inspired seasonal and holiday traditions against the backdrop of the Museum’s historic landscape,” Burdick said, “while providing a charming, intergenerational return to the values and traditions of one of America’s most favorite holidays of the year.”

The Shaker Table Restaurant will be open Saturday for lunch 11:30-4 and for dinner, 5 pm-9 pm, Sunday brunch 9-4, lunch 11:30-4. www.theshakertable.com
